The Best Homemade Play Dough

Hello friends,

I was thinking of fun activities to do inside with my littles since the winter has kept us in so much lately. Oakley and I thought it would be fun to make some homemade play dough. Yes, you can go the easy route and buy play dough at the store. I have personally done that many times but there is just something special about creating something fun in the kitchen with your littles.

So why DIY play dough? Making play dough is a very fun and easy thing to do with your kids. When you break down this easy homemade play dough recipe it is cheaper than buying play dough at the store. In my experience, this play dough doesn’t crumble and make a huge mess like store bought “Play-doh” can often do. Homemade play dough is not a one and done use activity. If you store the play dough correctly it can last you about a couple months. Just store in a Ziplock bag and your good to go!

HOMEMADE PLAY DOUIGH INGREDIENTS

  • All- purpose flour 1 cup
  • Water
  • Cream of tarter 2 teaspoons
  •  table salt 1/3 cup
  • Vegetable or canola oil 1 tablespoon
  • Food coloring 2-3 drops

*One batch of homemade play dough makes a large amount.

Step 1: Add flour, cream of tarter and salt to a saucepan.

Step 2: Add water, vegetable oil, and food coloring. Add a few drops of food coloring to 1 cup of water of water, then stir into the flour mixture along with your 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil.

Step 3: Cook and stir until your play dough starts to solidify. Heat your bummer to medium heat and stir. Your mixture can be a little lumpy and that’s okay. You will have the chance to work out the lumps later

Step 4: Keep stirring your mixture. The dough will start to become thicker and lumpier. Once the dough starts gathering around the spoon you know it done. This process can take around 2 minutes depending on how warm your stove top gets.

Step 5: Remove from the saucepan and let cool. Place dough on wax paper or a plate to cool.

Step 6: Once its cooled, knead the dough for a minute to get any lumps out.

Step 7: Enjoy, play, create!
